Adult Swim Bumper

Adult Swim-style bumpers for your Plex server.

PythonffmpegPlexNeXrollCLIYAML

A small Python CLI that turns a few lines of YAML into ten-second bumpers: plain white text over a background clip, some music underneath, and your server name in brackets at the end. Exactly like the ones I stayed up way too late watching on Adult Swim.

I built it for Joeflix, the Plex server I run for friends and family. 121 of these play in rotation before movies now, and people who join the server bring them up all the time.

how it works

  1. 01

    Write the jokes

Each bumper in bumpers.yaml gets a name, two to four text cards, a background clip, and a music track.

  2. 02

    Render

bumper render builds an MP4 for every new bumper with ffmpeg and adds [yourserver] as the last card.

  3. 03

    Play them before movies

Drop the output folder into NeXroll, or any pre-roll manager, and it shuffles them before every movie.

try it

pipx install git+https://github.com/joekarlsson/adult-swim-bumper.git
bumper init
bumper render

A bumper is just a few lines of YAML:

- name: hotdish
  cards:
    - 'a hotdish'
    - 'is just a casserole'
    - 'made with more intention.'
  video: videos/hotdish.mp4
  music: music/ambient-01.mp3

ls output/

A few from Joeflix. Hover to play, or use the controls.
