Why I joined SingleStore
I am excited to share today that I’ve joined SingleStore (Formerly MemSQL) as a Developer Advocate.
First, I want to say what an honor it is to be joining the founding Community Team in order to help nurture and support the massively talented current and future SingleStore developers as their numbers grow.
But, let’s get into it, why did I join SingleStore?
Innovation.
It’s simple, SingleStore is creating the future of databases. It’s no question that the data demands in every industry are exponentially growing, and I think that SingleStore is uniquely positioned to handle current and future data workloads. Increasingly, the most valuable data workloads are those that are data-intensive. This kind of workload is not compute-bound. It’s easy to scale compute in the cloud now. This kind of workload is not storage-bound. Again, it’s easy to scale storage in the cloud. Data-intensive workloads are those where *how* you process the data becomes the bottleneck.
Take, for instance, a document database used for your SaaS app. Once you start scaling your business, you need analytics and that’s the moment when you realize your document database wasn’t built for that, so you bolt-on a special-purpose database for analytics, maybe Elasticsearch or Snowflake. Then, you build an API and need low-latency fetches. So, you bolt on another special-purpose database, like Redis or AWS ElastiCache. So on and so forth. You get the idea: folks are building data-intensive apps by stitching together lots of databases and that’s just how you had to do it in 2016, but not anymore.
There’s a better way. SingleStore is the *single* database for data-intensive applications. And, it’s pretty special. SingleStore seamlessly separates compute from storage. It’s the first operational cloud database to do this. This means you can run real-time analytics, update machine learning models on the fly using streaming and historical data without needing to spin up any other systems. SingleStore is currently the only database in the industry that addresses both analytical and transactional workloads for the multi-cloud world.
I think the winners of the great “database wars” are going to be the systems that are the easiest to use, scale/maintain, and affordable, and SingleStore checks all of those boxes.
Opportunity.
I have the chance of a lifetime to build out a Community and Developers Relations team at SingleStore with my old friend, Wesley Faulkner, and my new friends, Akmal Chaudhri and Domenic Ravita. Together, we have the opportunity to build a program that aligns with our values and to build an inclusive developer community while a company is in hyper-growth mode. I couldn’t have asked for a better crew to collaborate with
Strong team culture.
The company culture can have a huge impact on how happy you are in a job, so you want to find one that suits you. Working in a startup often means that you are able to shape the surrounding culture. If you take a quick look at the SingleStore Glassdoor reviews, you will find that I’m not the only one that thinks we have a great culture.
Wrap up.
I am so excited about the future of SingleStore and our developer community. If you want to learn more about SingleStore, the best place to do that is on our SingleStore developer’s page or by trying it out for yourself! Be sure to try out the SingleStore managed database. It’s the easiest way to get an SQL database up and running in minutes.
We’re always hiring, so if you want to work with me at SingleStore, be sure to check out our careers page. https://www.singlestore.com/careers.
Be sure to follow @SingleStoreDevs on Twitter to stay up to date on the latest developer news at SingleStore. You can also follow me on my personal social accounts, it where I post about tech, leadership, community, and I post silly videos about programming. See you there!
